They weaken when citizens slowly accept the erosion of institutions, when accountability becomes selective, when truth becomes negotiable, and when silence replaces civic responsibility.

The strength of democracy is not measured only by elections or constitutions. Those are essential foundations, but they are not enough. Democracy survives because independent institutions continue to function, because courts remain accountable to law rather than political convenience, because journalists continue asking difficult questions, and because ordinary citizens refuse to become indifferent.

History repeatedly demonstrates that constitutional systems are strongest when they can restrain power rather than simply endorse it. Judicial independence is not designed to satisfy governments or opposition movements. It exists to preserve the constitutional order itself.

Afghanistan taught me a painful lesson.

Our republic possessed a constitution. We held elections. We established ministries, courts, security institutions, and democratic structures. Yet institutions slowly weakened under the pressure of corruption, political rivalry, external interference, and declining public confidence. By the time many people realized the depth of institutional decay, rebuilding them had become nearly impossible.

That experience permanently changed the way I understand democracy.

Many people imagine that democratic collapse arrives dramatically. In reality, it often arrives quietly.

It begins with small compromises.

People tolerate selective justice because they believe it affects someone else.

They ignore attacks on independent institutions because today's victim is politically different from themselves.

They excuse violations of principle because immediate political victory appears more important than long-term constitutional stability.

Eventually those compromises accumulate until institutions become too fragile to protect anyone.

This lesson extends far beyond Afghanistan.

No democracy should assume it is permanently immune.

The legal traditions, constitutional history, and institutional maturity of democratic societies certainly provide resilience. Yet resilience should never become complacency. Every generation inherits the responsibility of protecting institutions that previous generations struggled to build.

One of the greatest misunderstandings in international politics is the belief that democratic failure remains confined within national borders.

It does not.

When one nation experiences institutional collapse, the lessons belong to humanity.

When another nation successfully protects constitutional accountability, those lessons also belong to humanity.

Human rights cannot be genuinely universal if compassion stops at political borders.

Freedom cannot become meaningful if democratic concern exists only for our own societies while others disappear into silence.

Every society that values liberty should pay attention when another society loses it—not because histories are identical, but because human nature remains remarkably consistent.

Fear, polarization, corruption, extremism, political manipulation, and institutional erosion rarely appear in exactly the same form. Yet they often follow similar patterns.

That is why history deserves careful study.

Not to glorify the past.

Not to preserve endless memories of tragedy.

But to prevent repetition.

As writers, researchers, journalists, public servants, and citizens, our responsibility extends beyond documenting events. We must help future generations recognize warning signs before institutions begin to fail.

Democracy should never become a slogan repeated during elections.

It should remain a daily civic practice built upon responsibility, accountability, independent institutions, constitutional restraint, and respect for human dignity.

The greatest value of history lies not in recording what humanity has already lost.

Its greatest value lies in protecting what humanity still has the opportunity to preserve.

Wahidullah Noorzaei

Former Afghan National Police Officer | Independent Writer | Researcher on Afghanistan, Security, Democracy, and Human Dignity

Freedom Is Meaningless If It Belongs Only to Some

Written from the perspective of lived experience. Every nation has the right to honor the struggles that brought it freedom. But true freedom becomes even more meaningful when it reminds us of those who still live without it.

Today, while many celebrate, countless Afghan women remain deprived of education, work, and basic human dignity. Many journalists have been silenced. Many citizens live in fear simply for expressing an opinion. Behind closed doors, thousands continue to endure suffering that rarely reaches the world's headlines.

My purpose is not to accuse one nation or another. History has taught me that every society has known moments of darkness. What matters is whether we are willing to recognize the suffering of others as part of our shared human responsibility.

Human rights should never stop at political borders. Geography may divide states, but it does not divide human dignity. If human rights truly have meaning, they belong equally to every child, every woman, every man, regardless of nationality, religion, language, or political system.

As someone who has lived through war, institutional collapse, and forced displacement, I have learned that indifference is one of the greatest allies of injustice. No society should believe that the suffering of others can never become its own reality. History repeatedly reminds us that freedom can disappear far more quickly than people imagine when it is taken for granted.

Compassion is stronger than ideology. Humanity is greater than political rivalry. Our greatest victories will never be measured only by military power or economic success, but by our willingness to defend the dignity of people we may never meet.

If one corner of the world celebrates freedom while another burns in silence, our work is not yet finished.

May we celebrate liberty—but may we also remember those who are still waiting for it.

Because the value of humanity is not measured by the borders that separate us, but by the compassion that unites us.

آیا بحران ایران و آمریکا دوباره به نقطه خطر رسیده است؟ نگاهی راهبردی به واقعیت‌های منطقه

Editor's Note: This analysis reflects my personal strategic assessment based on historical developments, long-term observation of regional affairs, and my professional experience in security and crisi

(وحیدالله) Wahidullah Noozai

تحولات Experience, responsibility, and years in the field taught me otherwise.

In politics, security, conflict, and even ordinary life, decisions are rarely shaped by information alone. They are shaped by understanding—an understanding born from responsibility, observation, and lived experience.

Consider a simple example.

Two people speak about the same doctor.

The first says:

"I know that doctor. I've heard many good things about him."

The second says:

"I visited him. He examined me, diagnosed my illness, and prescribed treatment."

Both know the same name.

Yet they do not possess the same understanding.

The first knows the doctor's reputation.

The second has experienced the doctor's knowledge, judgment, and responsibility.

That is the difference between knowing and understanding.

Knowledge is familiarity with information.

Understanding is the result of experience.

Years of service taught me another lesson.

Titles do not always reflect competence.

Academic degrees do not automatically produce wisdom.

I have met people with impressive credentials who struggled when confronted with reality. Historical experience suggests that Washington tends to balance military options against broader regional and international consequences.

Pakistan's role in recent diplomatic efforts is also noteworthy. Islamabad appears eager to position itself as a relevant regional actor and diplomatic facilitator. This effort is driven not only by foreign policy considerations but also by internal security concerns and the desire to maintain strategic relevance in a rapidly changing region.

The central question, however, remains unresolved: Can an understanding between Tehran and Washington evolve into a sustainable peace?

The reality is that significant differences still exist between the two sides on regional security, strategic influence, and long-term political objectives. Furthermore, other regional actors have their own interests and concerns, making any agreement more complex and fragile.

For this reason, what is currently described as a “mutual understanding” may be better interpreted as a mechanism for crisis management rather than a definitive resolution of underlying disputes. It may serve to reduce immediate tensions, create diplomatic space, and provide time for strategic reassessment by all parties involved.

At present, the region appears to be in a phase that is neither full reconciliation nor direct confrontation. Instead, it reflects a period of controlled competition, strategic signaling, and cautious diplomacy. The ultimate outcome will depend on the decisions of key actors and the realities that emerge on the ground in the months ahead.

Thanks for reading Wahidullah's Substack! They analyze conflicts from a distance, often without ever experiencing the realities of the battlefield.

My story is different.

I was born into a time of conflict. My childhood dream was not power, rank, or authority. Like any child, I wanted to go to school, learn, and enjoy life. Yet before I could understand the meaning of peace, I witnessed the smoke of destruction and the uncertainty that war brings.

Fear became a familiar companion at an early age.

In such an environment, childhood ends sooner than it should. Reality arrives quickly. Concepts such as responsibility, survival, and sacrifice are no longer abstract ideas; they become part of daily life.

As I grew older, circumstances placed me on paths I had never chosen for myself. Eventually, I wore the uniform and served in difficult conditions. There, I learned lessons that no classroom and no theoretical discussion could fully teach.

One of the most important lessons was the difference between theory and reality.

Decisions are often made on paper, in offices, conference rooms, and strategic meetings. But their consequences are experienced on the ground, among real

people facing real risks.

I met individuals whose words sounded confident and convincing, yet their actions revealed a very different reality. At the same time, I witnessed ordinary men and women who stood firm under pressure, accepted responsibility, and remained committed when circumstances became difficult.

What troubled me most was not war itself.

It was the distance between battlefield reality and desk-bound analysis.

Those who have never faced the uncertainty of the field sometimes speak with certainty about matters they have never experienced. Yet the battlefield has its own language. It tests assumptions, exposes weaknesses, and often challenges even the most carefully designed plans.

For me, this became a lasting lesson:

Truth is not always found in reports, presentations, or theories. Often, it is found where consequences are real and where decisions meet reality.

This is not an attack on anyone, nor a defense of anyone.

It is simply the reflection of a life shaped by experience — a perspective formed not behind a desk, but in the field.

Colonel Wahidullah Norizaei is a former senior Afghan military officer, strategist, security analyst, and researcher. Having experienced conflict firsthand, he offers unique perspectives on warfare, leadership, resilience, and the gap between theory and reality. His writing combines field experience with historical and strategic analysis.

Thanks for reading Wahidullah's Substack! After the elimination of the cartel leader, tensions escalated sharply. At that stage, the influence of the drug networks within state structures had grown so deeply that, in some areas, it appeared stronger than the authority of the state itself.

A corrupt official—who had repeatedly failed to influence me through financial incentives—eventually shifted to direct threats. These threats went far beyond political pressure. Attempts were made to remove me entirely, including efforts to mobilize operatives for my physical elimination. It no longer mattered whether the threat came from outside or inside the system; coordination against me had begun at multiple levels.

Thanks for reading Wahidullah's Substack! However, this only intensified the pressure. Calls for my removal increased, and full authority was eventually delegated to this official. Still, he failed to succeed, as my operational credibility and recent field achievements had strong public and institutional support behind them.

Unable to justify his position after the seizure of massive narcotics shipments and the death of the cartel leadership and its associates, the situation turned against him. Facing internal questioning from his own network and external pressure from the traffickers, he shifted alliances. He and his group approached elements aligned with the Taliban leadership to present their grievances and failures.

Following this, a coordinated decision emerged with two primary objectives:

1. Destabilization of security checkpoints: targeting border security posts along the highway beyond my direct operational responsibility, but still under the influence of this corrupt network.

2. Opening infiltration routes into rural areas: enabling armed groups to enter villages under the cover of local administrative and security structures. These areas were ethnically and politically divided, and many of the targeted posts fell within zones linked to my operational responsibility.

The intention was clear: to exploit local tensions, intimidate pro-government communities, and create conditions for wider instability.

Upon receiving intelligence about these plans, I immediately moved to block all possible communication and operational routes—even those linked to the corrupt official himself.

The confrontation escalated further. Threats became more direct, including warnings of disarmament, removal from command, suspension of support, and arrest orders. The language became increasingly aggressive, and the institutional pressure reached its peak.

The situation was moving toward a full internal confrontation.wahidullah Noorzai

Former Senior Officer – Afghan National Security Forces

Field Commander | Military Strategist | Security Analyst

To be continued…

MilitaryMemoir #SecurityAnalysis #Afghanistan #CounterNarcotics #DrugTrafficking #Geopolitics #BorderSecurity #WarStories

Thanks for reading Wahidullah's Substack! My journey as a senior police officer began outside the standard military uniform, tasked with a high-stakes mission: overseeing the parliamentary election. My refusal to compromise led to a full audit, disqualifying 5 powerful incumbent local MPs—including the Head of the Herat Chamber of Commerce and the brother of the National Security Advisor. This move delayed the inauguration of parliament for months.

Over 12 years of merit-based service, I rose to the rank of Colonel. I was repeatedly promised promotion to General by top government officials, but those promises were always hijacked by political games. For instance, while serving as the Commander of the 2nd Battalion in Adraskan (covering Shindand, Farah, and Herat), the strategic highway was blocked by the powerful "Abdali" transport company protesting institutional corruption and extortion. Despite having been temporarily suspended due to internal conspiracies, I was reinstated and, within 48 hours, disarmed and arrested the corrupt Highway Battalion Commander and his entire complicit personnel—a corrupt official whom no one else dared to touch despite months of presidential arrest orders. Instead of the promised Provincial Command and General rank, I was kept there for three months against standard duty regulations, and was later deployed to the Torghundi border to secure the "TAPI" pipeline project due to my growing popularity among the people.

Thanks for reading Wahidullah's Substack! My hardest battles were never against external enemies, but against internal treachery and continuous threats of dismissal or forced surrender—all of which failed to break me.

My critique remains unyielding against the traitors of our history: from the Soviet-aligned Communists, to the Mujahideen of '79 who commercialized faith, to their modern offshoot, the Taliban, who operate in total ignorance and extremism. According to the Quran, Jihad is an obligation only to defend human dignity and honor; hence, the Taliban's war is religiously forbidden (Haram).

My lifelong motto remains: "Freedom at any cost" and "Our heaven must not be built through the hell of others." On the final day of the collapse, I wrote: "The dreams of my generation were buried, but they will grow back. What remains is the stamp of disgrace on the foreheads of those who brokered our country. Herat, one of the oldest centers of civilization, culture, and intellectual life in the region, has long held a distinguished place in the history of Afghanistan and the wider Islamic world. With figures such as Khwaja Abdullah Ansari, Mawlana Jami, and other prominent scholars, poets, and mystics, the city represents a deep continuity of knowledge, ethics, and cultural identity.

Alongside this historical legacy, Afghanistan’s recent decades of conflict have left behind complex experiences of war, political fragmentation, and armed movements that continue to shape collective memory. Field experiences and direct observations from these periods form part of the broader social and security realities of the country.

In this context, I would like to share a personal field experience from my years of military service. During the time when I was serving as a battalion commander in the Sayyidabad district, I visited a village during an operation and field assessment. The local residents testified that individuals affiliated with the Taliban, under the claim of “jihad,” had demanded families to marry their daughters to their fighters. According to the villagers’ accounts, the consent of the girls themselves was not respected, and refusal was reportedly condemned and labeled as a “sin” by those actors. These testimonies, as conveyed by local residents at the time, became part of the lived memory of that period of conflict.

In the present situation, reports have emerged from Herat regarding increased restrictions on women’s presence in public life. From the perspective of a significant number of observers, both domestic and international, such measures are interpreted as further limitations on women’s participation in social, educational, and public spheres. Regardless of the stated motivations, such policies carry broad implications for social structure, public trust, and the country’s human capital.

Historical experience across different societies has shown that the marginalization or exclusion of women from social, educational, and economic life is often associated with reduced social dynamism and slower development. Conversely, societies that have managed to maintain a balance between cultural values and the inclusive participation of all segments of society, including women, have generally achieved more stable and sustainable development paths.

From a historical and cultural perspective, Herat is not merely a city but a civilizational symbol. Any transformation in its social fabric inevitably resonates beyond local boundaries and attracts national and regional attention.
